In fact, the attack consisted in infecting the system with a virus that had been developed by the UK's National Health Service and used for routine tasks. The British parliament's website was partly shut down after being penetrated. In March 2018, a new hacking group appeared on the scene that, labels by the name of Fancy Bear, claimed responsibility for an attack on the United Kingdom's Parliament in April 2017. The FBI has taken over the case, following an investigation by the security firm CloudPassage, and thus it remains to be seen whether Russian authorities will be able to prove their involvement in the case once again, or whether they will opt for another campaign.
The hacker group, which called itself APT28 and had ties to Cozy Bear, is believed to have targeted 41 entities, including the White House, the State Department and the U.S. The attack was deemed to be part of a cyber-espionage campaign aimed at collecting U.S. Department of State suffered a major defacement via a cyberintrusion of its website by the same hackers.
